Interview with David from The Golden Pathway by Donna McDine

Q. David, you are afraid of your father. How did you gain the strength and courage to defy him?

A. Beating animals is wrong, so why is it okay for pa to beat humans? Seeing the marks he left on Jenkins made me want to hurl. I knew in my heart I had to help Jenkins no matter what.

Q. How did you know to ask Mr. Stump for help?

A. I overheard grownups talking outside of church one morning about how wrong slavery was and how Mr. Stump was determined to help.

Q. Interesting. No one saw you lurking around?

A. Oh no. It is always my job to gather up the church missalettes from the adults after services. So it gives me the perfect chance to hear lots of interesting stuff.

Q. What type of interesting stuff?

A. I can’t really say. I do not want to ruin other chances to help more slaves. I better get going before Pa wonders where I have been. Bye.

I sure wish I could meet that boy in person. Oh Wait! He’s not real and if he were he’d be dead by now. But maybe reading about him will inspire other kids to be courageous like him.
